10 Low-Light Houseplants That Are Nearly Impossible to Kill

Not everyone has a sun-drenched apartment with south-facing windows. If your space gets limited natural light — or you tend to forget about watering — these resilient houseplants will thrive where others won't.

1. Snake Plant (Sansevia trifasciata)

The snake plant is practically indestructible. It tolerates low light, infrequent watering, and dry air. Its upright, sword-shaped leaves add a modern look to any room. Water only when the soil is completely dry — roughly every 2-3 weeks.

Why it's foolproof: Snake plants actually prefer being neglected. Overwatering is the only real way to kill them.

2. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Pothos is the ultimate beginner plant. Its trailing vines grow quickly in almost any light condition. It's also one of the best air-purifying plants according to NASA studies. Hang it from a shelf or let it trail from a bookcase.

3. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

The ZZ plant stores water in its thick rhizomes, making it extremely drought-tolerant. Its glossy, dark green leaves look polished even in dim corners. Water once a month and it's happy.

4. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

Peace lilies bloom in low light and actually droop dramatically when they need water — making them one of the few plants that literally tells you when to water them. They also filter common indoor air pollutants.

5. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)

Named for its near-indestructibility, the cast iron plant was popular in Victorian-era homes for exactly this reason. It handles low light, temperature fluctuations, and irregular watering without complaint. Its dark green, arching leaves bring life to the darkest corners.

6. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

Chinese evergreens come in beautiful variegated patterns — silver, pink, and green. They prefer low to medium light and actually develop more color in lower light conditions. Water when the top inch of soil dries out.

7. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are prolific growers that produce "babies" you can propagate into new plants. They tolerate low light, though they grow faster in indirect light. Their arching, striped leaves add a cheerful look to any room.

8. Philodendron

Both heartleaf and split-leaf philodendrons adapt well to low light. They're trailing plants that look beautiful cascading from shelves. Heartleaf philodendrons are especially forgiving of neglect.

9. Dracaena

Dracaenas come in many varieties — from the tall, tree-like marginata to the compact, colorful "Janet Craig." All thrive in low to medium light and only need watering when the top few inches of soil dry out.

10. Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans)

The parlor palm has been a popular houseplant since Victorian times because it grows well in the dim light of indoor rooms. It stays compact, grows slowly, and needs only occasional watering. A natural air purifier too.
