Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Most houseplant pest problems start because of one of these factors:
- Overwatering โ creates conditions fungus gnats and root rot love
- Poor air circulation โ stagnant air lets pests breed undisturbed
- New plants brought home untreated โ always quarantine new plants for 2 weeks
- Dry indoor air โ spider mites thrive when humidity drops below 40%
The Big Five Houseplant Pests
1. Fungus Gnats
What they look like: Tiny black flies (like fruit flies) hovering around soil. The larvae live in the top inch of moist soil and feed on organic matter and roots.
Damage: Mostly cosmetic for mature plants, but larvae can damage seedlings and young roots.
Treatment:
- Let soil dry out completely between waterings
- Place yellow sticky traps near the soil surface
- Water with a 1:4 hydrogen peroxide solution (kills larvae)
- Top-dress with sand or diatomaceous earth to prevent egg-laying
๐ชค Yellow Sticky Traps (Pack)
Double-sided sticky traps that catch fungus gnats, whiteflies, and other flying pests. Non-toxic and pesticide-free.

What they look like: Nearly invisible to the naked eye. Look for fine webbing on leaf undersides, tiny white/yellow speckles on leaves (stippling), and tiny moving dots with a magnifying glass.
Damage: Serious โ they suck cell contents from leaves, causing yellowing, browning, and leaf drop. Can kill plants if untreated.
Treatment:
- Spray leaves with a strong stream of water to dislodge them
- Apply neem oil solution weekly (1 tsp neem oil + 1 tsp dish soap per quart of water)
- Increase humidity โ spider mites hate moisture
- For severe infestations, use insecticidal soap
3. Mealybugs
What they look like: White, cottony clusters in leaf joints, along stems, and on roots. About 1/8 inch long, oval-shaped, and they don't move much.
Damage: They suck sap, weakening the plant and causing yellowing, stunted growth, and sticky honeydew (which leads to sooty mold).
Treatment:
- Dab individual bugs with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol
- Spray with neem oil or insecticidal soap
- Check roots too โ root mealybugs are a hidden problem
- Repeat treatment every 7-10 days for 3 cycles
4. Scale Insects
What they look like: Brown, tan, or white bumps on stems and leaves. They look like part of the plant โ flat or slightly raised oval shells that don't move.
Damage: Heavy sap loss causes yellowing, leaf drop, and weakened growth. Like mealybugs, they produce honeydew.
Treatment:
- Scrape off with a fingernail or old toothbrush
- Apply rubbing alcohol with a cotton swab to individual scales
- Spray entire plant with neem oil or horticultural oil
- Severe infestations may require systemic insecticide
5. Aphids
What they look like: Small (1/8 inch), soft-bodied insects โ green, black, white, or pink. Cluster on new growth and leaf undersides. They multiply fast.
Damage: Curled, yellowed, or distorted new growth. They also spread plant viruses and produce honeydew.
Treatment:
- Blast them off with water (they're soft-bodied and can't recover)
- Spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil
- Introduce ladybugs as biological control (outdoors)
- Check neighboring plants โ aphids spread quickly

Sometimes a plant is too far gone. Consider discarding a plant if:
- More than 50% of the plant is damaged or defoliated
- Pests keep returning after 3+ treatment cycles
- The plant is in a pot with others โ remove it before it infects the rest
- Root mealybugs or root rot have destroyed the root system
